A damp chill grips the air, even in the middle of the Utah summer. The days are hot and long, while the night brings about a ghostly chill to the skin, like damp set into the bones of an old house for the long haul.

No seasons of the year were ever normal anymore.

Deckard does his jacket up tight beneath his grizzled chin. Scratches an earlobe and ponders the long day. Knew he’d traveled a great distance. Found companions he believed he could trust once again. But also, knew the kids needed protecting from the horrors of the world, and from themselves, it seems. He’s unsure he wants to be the lion of the pride. The bear father looking after young cubs trekking all the way to Portland, to salvation.

Huh, he muses at the word. Jeez, these kids must believe in this shit real bad. Bad enough to travel across the unknown states of Good Ol’ America to what… endless possibilities of unknowns?

He does a quick circuit of the grounds; checks, re-checks the perimeter. No signs of the dead. Goes back up the hill, sits underneath the tree for shade. He has a perfect 360 of the surrounding land. Every square mile of geographical delights. He has an itchy back and uses the trunk of the Balsam Poplar as a scratch post; the tough bark itching that itch. (The tree is uncommon to the area, just like them. Just drifters trying to find a way in the unfamiliar world.)

Itch finally satisfied, there he sits, ponders, and waits till dawn.
